RANGIWAHIA SCENIC RESERVE visitor comments
A visitor book is available in a green mailbox at the end of the car park and before the trail begins. Retired local MP, Ian McKelvie, suggested a visitor’s book after he himself walked through the reserve. We are so pleased we followed through with his suggestion as we now have a record of people's experiences from all around NZ and the world.

Wanganui Tramping Club - 10 members. Clear skies. Cool breeze. Walk was fantastic, farm tracks were muddy, but tracks in the bush were dry enough. This is a favourite outing for our club.

Rangiwahia - caretakers - Track maintenace and pest control. Laneway is a bit muddy in places. We hope it will grass over in the summer. Tracks are both in good condition. Heard tui, bellbird, waxeye, grey warbler, fantail, and morepork just at the end of the track.
Wanganui Tramping Club. - 12 members. Cool, clear sunny day. Track in very good condition, not too slippery.Some fallen trees but no blockages. Thanks to the maintenance crew.

Former Rangiwahian - The track was quite challenging. Steep ups and downs. Becuase i was on my own, I was very careful on the wet downhill steep bits. I’m not tall so I was heaving myself up in places. I’m definitely going to have sore calves & knees. I was planning to do the circuit, but ended up doing the same track again somehow. Double the steep ups and downs but it was beautiful. I’ve taken lots of photos and visdeos to share. I’ve never seen so many huge and tall trees. Magnificient. Thanks to all who keep & protect this.

Rangiwahia. (caretakers). 11.1.2024. We put in the last of the updated signs. They are made permanent material like the big entrance sign and give people an opportunity to learn about our endemic bush. Beautiful evening. A perfume throughout the reserve coming from the common lower-story tree - whiteywood//mahoe. The Northern rātā is out in flower and can be seen from the entrance stile.

Napier. What a fantastic walk. I am a tramper and have done walks and tramps all around New Zealand. This walk is so well signed with the pink markers. Some of the DOC walks could learn a lot from this walk with inadequate arrow signs on some of their walks. This track is a credit to Rangiwahia. I will be back.

Comment in Google from same couple - The beautiful section of New Zealand forest is one on the most surreal places I've been in the country. I work in a career where I'm often out in forests and I have never seen a place quite like it anywhere else in the manawatu. Absolutely stunning. Excellently sign posted, and with rope to help you through the potentially slippery areas, we went during the rain today and it was great! A very vocal piwakawaka followed us most of the way, practically sitting on our shoes at some points. Incredible care has been taken to maintain the track but keep the integrity of the forest, it truly seems like someone has worked around the trees instead of against them.

Rangiwahia - caretakers- Pest control around the Three Hour track. Also check ed the traps in the Kaikawaka Reserve near the cemetery. Amazing bird song in both reserves. Heaps of tui and fantail, plus grey warbler, tomtit and wood pigeon. Heard a NZ Falcon in the Rangi Reserve.

The old dead totara at the top of the Reserve track (1st track) has fallen over. It only covered a small section of the track and it was fairly straight-forward to clear it.

Wellington - Thought it was great & find a reserve I could take my dog to, but the stile meant we couldn’t access – maybe a spring-gate?
(Writers note - the stile has been altered so that dogs should be able to climb over with ease).

Former Rangiwahian - The track was quite challenging. Steep ups and downs. Becuase i was on my own, I was very careful on the wet downhill steep bits. I’m not tall so I was heaving myself up in places. I’m definitely going to have sore calves & knees. I was planning to do the circuit, but ended up doing the same track again somehow. Double the steep ups and downs but it was beautiful. I’ve taken lots of photos and visdeos to share. I’ve never seen so many huge and tall trees. Magnificient. Thanks to all who keep & protect this.

A perfume throughout the reserve coming from the common lower-story tree - whiteywood//mahoe. The Northern rātā is out in flower and can be seen from the entrance stile.

Comment in Google from same couple - The beautiful section of New Zealand forest is one on the most surreal places I've been in the country. I work in a career where I'm often out in forests and I have never seen a place quite like it anywhere else in the manawatu. Absolutely stunning. Excellently sign posted, and with rope to help you through the potentially slippery areas, we went during the rain today and it was great! A very vocal piwakawaka followed us most of the way, practically sitting on our shoes at some points. Incredible care has been taken to maintain the track but keep the integrity of the forest, it truly seems like someone has worked around the trees instead of against them.

Palmerston North – Counting the birds for NZ bird Atlas
Rangiwahia (the caretakers of the bush) – Managing traps & counting the birds. Flocks of wax eyes, plenty of famtails, grey warblers, kererus, few tomtits, beelbirds & tuis. Some eastern rosellas, blackbirds, spur-winged plovers, a few chaffinches. The bird numbers are definitely increasing.

Titahi Bay - A wonderful hike. Thanks so for the efforts to construct the track. One suggestion. The stiles are almost impossible for dogs. Had to lift my 30kg GSP up and over the last one. Could you make access easier for dogs?
Wellington - Thought it was great & find a reserve I could take my dog to, but the stile meant we couldn’t access – maybe a spring-gate?
(Writers note - the stile has been altered so that dogs should be able to climb over with ease).
