The new iron gate hut

Iron Gate Track & Hut

Iron Gate Hut is situated about 3-4 hours from the Alice Nash Heritage Memorial Lodge for relatively-experienced trampers. DOC have recently replaced the hut with a smart new hut set above the Oroua River.
  • There are platform bunks with mattresses which can sleep ten people.
  •  It has double-glazed windows
  • Modern kitchen facilties
  • A wood fire helps keep the hut warm in the colder months, but you will need to collect firewood from the surrounding bush.
  • The toilets are situated over 50 meters from the hut.
  • It is classed as a standard Department of Conservation Hut, so you will need a hut pass or hut ticket. These can be purchased from the Palmerston North City i-SITE, 0800 626 292.

The track itself is a beautiful sidling walk, but is challenging as  there are steep inclines dropping in & out of various streams. There are, however some beautiful walks through red beech forest within a valley above the river, especially within an hour of reaching the hut itself.  The track runs near the Oroua River on the way to the hut, but the river is seldom visible. Blue Duck or whio have been sited on the Oroua near the hut.
Please note.
It is important to write your name/s in the visitor hut books for safety reasons and record keeping.
DOC's policy may be to remove back country huts if there are less than 100 people staying at a hut per year
