SAFE TRAMPING

a well earnt break

Tramping & Trip Planning around the iron gates experience

The Iron Gates Experience is an exciting area of the Manawatu to visit and enjoy, with diversity in scenery and activities.
Here are important issues  you need to consider in your trip planning

HUT FEES - Purchasing hut tickets
  • These are needed when staying in any of the huts. Tickets can be purchased from DOC, Palmerston North City i-SITE and from some outdoor retail outlets.
  • The fees are used to help with the high-maintenance costs of up keeping the huts, so it is important that you pay them.
  • For further information visit the Department of Conservation online.
  • Check out the Hut fees as shown in the table below.

TRAMPING
Remember, the weather can change quickly in the mountains. Even on a day trip, you need to be properly prepared.
  • Check the weather conditions
  • Make sure someone at home knows where you are headed
  • Lock your vehicle & remember where you keep your keys
  • Take a cell phone, though there is limited coverage, map, compass, GPS locator (if you have one) in case you get lost,  & of course your camera
  • For  further information go to The Dept. of Conservation (DOC)
  • When visiting a hut, record your name, weather conditions and where you are headed.
  • Take appropriate clothing, such as tramping  footwear, woollen hat, waterproof jacket, woollen socks
  • Prepare and take a first aid kit, including plasters, panadol, anti-histamines, a bandage, sissors, tweezers, pocket knife
  • Take plenty of food. If on a day trip, this is the time to have plenty of  high energy food, such as salted peanuts and raisins, scroggin mixes, fruit, cheese, crackers plus your water bottles. For the chocolate lovers, a bar of high energy chocolate is a must!!
  • Remove all litter. What you take in to the bush take out. Leave only foot prints.
  • If unsure of the tramp & what to do, ring  Phone the Department of Conservation on 06 350 9700.
  • Remember to enjoy the beautiful bush, rivers & birds.
