Another Northern manawatu hidden gem

HERITAGE PARK

Just north of Kimbolton, turn left onto Haggerty Street and you'll find a delightful surprise at number 34 — a 5-hectare park set on a gentle-rolling hill, with a meandering stream running through the valley.

Wide, well-kept grassy paths guide you through ever-changing scenery, making every turn a new experience. The highlight of this tranquil park is its impressive collection of over 2,000 varieties of rhododendrons, which thrive in the park’s acidic soil. You’ll also find beautiful azaleas, magnolias, and other stunning specimen trees, including the slow-growing Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair tree), all of which create a haven for birdlife.

Heritage Park sits 520 metres above sea level and was founded in 1969 by Dr John Yeates. What began as a sheep-grazed paddock has been lovingly transformed into today’s flourishing garden thanks to the dedication of volunteers. A small entry fee helps maintain and enhance the park.

Directions to two of Manawatu's most stunning rhododendron parks, located at the corner of Kimbolton Road and Haggerty Street.
The best time to visit is during October and November, when rhododendrons and azaleas are in full bloom, filling the air with the sweet scent of varieties like R. nuttallii and R. lindleyi. However, the garden is worthy of a visit anytime of the year.

Heritage Park is truly one of Northern Manawatu’s hidden treasures — a place waiting to be discovered.
