Wood Pigeon - Kereru

in a kowhai tree

Bird Watching

Bird life is abundant in the Iron Gates experience -
some would say it is a photographers dream,
thats if actually get to see them!
Our  birds have beautiful songs and the dawn chorus fills the early morning with an incredible bird choir with the bell birds’ flute-like song ringing out.
Many of our endemic and native birds prefer the
tree tops right out of view. More often you hear
them & see from a distance.
The secret is to be patient & just sit and wait.

Sometimes you just mange to be at the
right place at the right time as was the case with the
Morepork in the above photo.
Steve took this photo one night in our garden.

He happened to be outside when the Morepork flew past missing him by a whisker. Steve found him sitting in the Kowhai tree with rimu foliage hanging behind.
He shone his headlight onto him & he sat there for several minutes while we took photos.
